Gynecomastia is an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone.
Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.
There are many causes for gynecomastia, most commonly an imbalance of the hormones testosterone and estrogen.
Gynecomastia (known as “moobs”) is swelling of the breast tissue in men. It can cause a lot of distress.
It’s is triggered by a decrease in testosterone compared to the body’s level of estrogen. Its most common in adult men between the ages of 50 and 80 but can effect men of any age.
It is estimated that at least 1 in 4 men in this age group are affected by the condition at some point.
It can be due to normal hormonal changes that happen as you age but the following conditions can also play a role:
- Increased body fat
- Steroid use
- Anti-androgens used to treat prostate cancer (Finasteride) prostate enlargement
- HIV/AIDS and
- Anti-anxiety medications
- Tri-cyclic antidepressants
- Some antibiotics
- Hypogonadism
- Hyperthyroidism
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease and failure
- Testicular cancer
- Adrenal or pituitary tumours
- Alcohol
- Opiates…
This condition can seriously impact confidence, mental health, relationships and all round happiness.
A lot of men simply accept it and suffer in silence when there are some reversible causes.
It’s also worth getting checked out to ensure you don’t have any health issues that need treating.
How is gynecomastia managed or treated?
Some people don’t want or need treatment for gynecomastia. If a medication or other substance is causing breasts to enlarge, you may need to stop using the drug or switch to a different one.
Can gynecomastia be prevented?
You can’t prevent many of the hormone changes that cause gynecomastia
Male breast enlargement often goes away over time or with medication changes. Some men become self-conscious about their appearance, which may lead to depression and anxiety.
But these problems should improve once gynecomastia is treated.
