PDO (Polydioxanone) thread contouring and lift is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment designed to lift and tighten sagging skin on the face and neck. PDO threads have been used in the medical field for over 15 years, primarily for wound closure, and are now a popular option for aesthetic rejuvenation.
The PDO thread lift procedure works by inserting threads that are designed to stimulate collagen production in the skin, tightening sagging tissues. The PDO threads also provide a mechanical lifting effect, enhancing the contours of the face and neck.
Before the Procedure:
The doctor will take a detailed medical history and assess your facial and neck areas.Photos of the treatment areas will be taken for your medical notes.Antibiotics (Azithromycin 500 mg) will be given before the procedure and continued for two days afterward.Local anaesthetic (lidocaine with and without adrenaline) will be injected to numb the treatment areas, causing temporary numbness (similar to dental injections).
During the Procedure:
Fine, absorbable PDO threads are inserted into the subcutaneous layer of the skin using needles (or cannulas). The treatment involves a combination of larger, barbed PDO threads (cogs) and sometimes smaller, smooth threads (monofilaments). Cogs are placed in areas like the jawline, cheeks, forehead, and neck to lift sagging tissues, while monofilaments are used to stimulate skin tightening.
After the Procedure:
Antibiotic cream or a medical liquid plaster will be applied to the insertion sites.
Ice packs may be used to reduce swelling and bruising.
Patients should avoid chewing or drinking hot liquids until the numbness wears off.
Washing the face is not recommended on the same day; gentle cleansing is advised starting the following day.
Avoid opening the mouth widely and refrain from routine dental treatments for at least 4 weeks post-procedure.
Avoid aspirin and other blood thinners for seven days.
Steer clear of extreme temperatures (e.g., saunas) for a week.
Refrain from other cosmetic treatments for 14 days.
PDO thread contouring is a safe, minimally invasive, and cost-effective alternative to traditional surgery. The PDO threads are biodegradable, and after about six months, only the newly formed collagen remains. Threads themselves are biostimulatory and help the body generate collagen around them. The procedure is non-allergenic, with minimal discomfort lasting only 3-4 days post-treatment.
Mild swelling for 2-3 days.
Bruising (patients on blood thinners may bruise more easily).
Protrusion of the thread if placed too superficially (can be removed).
Bruising or hematoma from puncturing a blood vessel (minimized by using cannulas).
Facial nerve injury (avoided with cannula use).
Granulomas or a foreign body reaction if threads are placed too superficially (can be removed).
Existing asymmetry may not be fully corrected.
Discomfort is generally manageable with oral paracetamol, but anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen should be avoided as they can interfere with collagen production.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled at 14 days, However, if any concerns arise, please contact the clinic immediately.
