Detox

What is “Alcohol Detox”?

'Detox’ is the process by which a qualified clinician helps to minimise your alcohol withdrawal symptoms by using appropriate medications (diazepam or chlordiazepoxide). This is usually done over a short period of time (a number of days) in order to reduce the withdrawal symptoms safely and comfortably.

Once the ‘detox’ is complete, you are no longer physically dependant on alcohol but you may still experience the psychological aspects of dependence, know as 'craving'. This is the point where it’s important to engage in psychological treatments to help support your recovery.

What are the signs of alcohol withdrawal?Symptoms can start within 8 to 24 hours from the last alcoholic drink and can include:

•    Shakey hands
•    Sweating
•    A fast heart beat or palpitations
•    Nausea and sometimes vomiting
•    Headaches
•    Loss of appetite
•    Depression
•    Anxiety
•    Irritability and generalised restlessness

Severe symptoms can also include hallucinations and seizures.

Delirium tremens (‘DTs’) that can give a rapid onset of confusion and disorientation. Withdrawal can also impact blood pressure and breathing.

Effective

Community-Based Alcohol Detox

Our alcohol detox program is designed to be accessible and supportive, allowing patients to undergo detoxification within their community, with the support of an allocated sponsor (usually a friend or family member). The program includes:

  • Initial Consultation and Blood Tests: A thorough assessment to tailor the detox plan to the patient's health needs.
  • Secondary Planning Meeting: Developing a personalized detox strategy with our specialists.
  • Pabrinex Infusions: Essential vitamin infusions to help mitigate the physical effects of alcohol withdrawal.
  • Ongoing Prescribing: Medication management to support abstinence and recovery.
  • Support Network: Encouragement for patients to have a friend or relative prepared to support them throughout the detox process.
