Dermal fillers have been around in various forms for over 100 years! The concept was brought about by an Austrian surgeon, Robert Getsuny in the 1800s. He experimented with using Vaseline as a soft tissue filler for facial defects but you’ll be relieved to hear things have come on phenomenally since then!
Bovine collagen fillers became available in the 1970’s (yes, from cows) and Bellafill is one remaining on the market today. Bovine collagen can create big inflammatory problems so there was a need for a better solution.
The solution was (and remains) hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers were the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in 2017.
Hyaluronic acid used in dermal fillers is a useful treatment option to address age-related changes in skin quality and appearance. It can also be injected into our skin to fill, plump, shape and contour specific areas. It is naturally occurring in our skin, joints, eyes and connective tissue.
The most important characteristics of HA is that it has a very high capacity for retaining water, and therefore hydrating the skin.
It is present in large quantities in the extracellular matrix (ECM) in our skin. Sadly it’s abundance can this deteriorate with age. Because of its significant hydrophilic nature, that is its ability to attract and bind water molecules, HA is important for maintaining structure and volume in the skin. Collagen, elastin, and HA team up to form the supportive scaffold of the skin, providing structure, and texture and that natural youthful glow.
Hyaluronic acid also plays a role in tissue and wound repair. In the joints, HA is present in cartilage and synovial fluid, acting as both a lubricant and shock absorber. It’s clever stuff!
It can be applied to:
- Reduce wrinkles and facial/ neck lines.
- Restructure or embellish cheeks.
- Amend or embellish lip shape.
- Lessen the appearance of sagging and age related volume loss.
- Reduce the appearance of depressions in the skin caused by acne scars or injury.
- Improve elasticity and hydration of facial, hand, neck and neckline skin.
There are many different dermal fillers available. We use a number of brands and tailor the product to the clients beds but we very much like the outcomes when using Teoxane, Juvaderm and Belotero
What to expect?
Your appointment will be with a doctor or nurse (or sometime both) and they will listen to your areas of concern and discuss with you how you would like to address them. They will explain options to you and give as much information as you’d like about the process. After deciding what treatment option you would like, they will discuss potential outcomes, including any complications that can occur and how those complications can be managed.
If you are content with this, you will be asked if photographs can be taken before treatment for your clinical records.
The area to be treated will be cleaned and sometimes your skin will be marked to ensure appropriate treatment is applied. Sometime a local anaesthetic cream (also known as numbing cream) is applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Most products also contain lidocaine which is a numbing agent.
The treatment will then be done and some photographs will be taken afterwards for your clinical records. We will then go over the after care advice and provide written advice to take away.
Occasionally we might ask if we can use your photographs for our website or social media. We will always ask written permission.
You will then have online or telephone access to our clinicians if you have any after thoughts or queries.
